My good friend Sue Lurie and I toured Teton Valley Idaho to see what remained of fall colors. We were quite surprised that the colors were still pretty well at prime time.

Lava Hot Springs Fall Colors
Posted: October 06, 2022

I visited the Lava Hot Springs area on the recommendation of Loren Nelson, a fellow member of the Teton Photography Club. Afterwards, I continued east and onto the Alpine, WY (US 30, SR 38) in search of aspens turning yellow.

All in all, a pretty spectacular journey!

Teton Valley
Posted: August 25, 2021

Today was a nice day weather wise and the smoke situation was quite a bit better. I decided to get out of the house and snap a few photos. The photos are sort of a hodge podge of subjects.

I drove 5000 South to the point where it dead ends at the Teton River and took quite a few photos along the drive. In the evening, I was on a Zoom meet up with the Teton Photography Club and I happened to look out my window around sunset. It looked like it was going to be a nice one, so I broke away from the meeting for a bit to capture some sunset photos outside my front door.

A blast from the past!

I was looking through some stuff and I ran across some photos that were taken during the early days of Casa Budde West. I thought folks who have visited might enjoy these.

Craters of the Moon
Posted: August 30, 2019

These are the other photos I took while visiting Craters of the Moon National Preserve.

I arrived in the afternoon when the skies were pretty bright. I drove the Loop Road mainly looking for a location to return to for my Milky Way shoot. I took some other photos as well. The next morning with a bit better lighting conditions and a few clouds I drove the loop again for some more photos.

Big Holes
Posted: August 25, 2019

I went on a Jeep ride with my good friend Rodney Henry into the upper reaches of the Big Hole mountain range on the west side of Teton Valley. We drove some very rugged roads all the way to the top of the highest peaks in the range. Cell towers are located on these peaks.

I took an overnight trip down to Swan Valley to take Milky Way and sunrise photos. As usual, the Milky Way photos were somewhat of a disappointment.

However, the sunrise and the clouds were phenomenal!

Trail Creek Pass
Posted: June 18, 2019

I had lunch in Ketchum Idaho... a great club sandwich!

It had been many years since I had been through Ketchum. I had forgotten how lovely a location it was located in as it is surrounded by mountains.

From Ketchum, I drove north over Trail  Creek Pass. It was a very pretty drive. The road at its highest elevations was an unimproved road but seemed to have been recently bladed and was quite nice. It was advertised as "one way with pullouts". This drive is definitely do-again-able!

I was not expecting much in the way of photography options here but boy was I surprised!

I arrived in the late afternoon and therefore the lighting conditions were pretty nice. I was also greeted by some fairly nice clouds to further improve the compositions.

I do plan to return in the future. This area is also designated as a "dark sky" area so I may time my return to coincide with a new moon.

I visited the Camas National Wildlife Area this afternoon. The various ponds were very full and the mosquitoes were in abundance.

These photos were taken handheld with my Tamron 150-600mm lens and they were heavily cropped for presentation here.

Snake River Float
Posted: August 30, 2018

For a number of years, my friend Chris Conant, who guides on the South Fork of the Snake River, has said he would take me on a float so I could take photos of beautiful Fall Creek Falls from a river perspective. Well today was finally the day.

Chris, his first mate Sage, Rick Schuessler and I made the voyage down the Snake. It was a beautiful float and we had a great time together especially the first mate.

We saw many raptors along the way both perched in trees and in flight. Unfortunately, I had very little luck getting decent photos of these magnificent birds. My guess is that my shutter speed was too slow (~ 1/250 sec) for an in-focus capture in a moving drift boat in moving water. If I get the opportunity to do this again, I believe I will shoot for 1/1000 sec or maybe even higher.

We did get some really nice photos of the falls.

While at the falls, Chris spotted a moose on an island adjacent to the falls. It was feeding on the willows. We took some photos while also taking photos of the falls. The moose then went into the water and swam towards the falls. Chris was ecstatic as in all of the many, many times he had been down that section of the river, he had never seen what we were observing.

Upon reaching the area just beneath the falls, the moose fed on the vegetation. Quite a nice viewing experience for all... well the first mate did not seem to be too impressed.

Camas/Mud Lake National Wildlife Area
Posted: August 29, 2018

Rick Schuessler and I visited these two refuges today. The weather was fantastic.

At Camas, the ponds were almost non-existent compared to my visit at the end of July. Where there was water, one could see the birds standing on the bottom of the pond while feeding.

Two highlights of the day: a pair of Great Blue Herons and a Rough-Legged Hawk (I think) perched on a post with it's mouse dinner.

Camas National Wildlife Area

I discovered this on the Web. It is located about 1-1/2 hours drive from Driggs. I had previously visited Gray's Lake National Wildlife Refuge a few years ago and was not overly impressed. Camas was impressive especially for the large amount of birds that can be seen there.

Milky Way - Swan Valley
Posted: July 12, 2018

Went down to Swan Valley again for the Milky Way. This time I was the only photographer there. I used my light to illuminate the schoolhouse from my shooting location. I seemed to have the best luck with the light on its lowest setting lit for about 2/3 of the time the shutter was open.

Milky Way - Swan Valley
Posted: June 14, 2018

Last night I drove down to Swan Valley for my first ever Milky Way shoot. As I was getting setup, another photographer (Bob Seidel from Idaho Falls) arrived. Bob is an experienced Milky Way photographer so it was nice to have a knowledgeable person on hand.

Bob's plan was to create some images that featured the schoolhouse along with others to feature the Milky Way and then composite them in Photoshop. Since I am not a Photoshop user, my plan was to take a single photo to process in Lightroom.

Bob setup some lights for the evening inside the old schoolhouse. They were a bit too bright for my single image as you can see with the photo on the left.

My resultant photos are pretty crude in my opinion. Other than the lighting problem mentioned above, the stars are not in focus. Clouds, at times covering the Milky Way, were a bit of a problem as well.

We finished up around 2:30 AM. I wound up spending the night in my gasoline powered tent (my car) with the intention of taking some more photos the next morning.

I also went to Fall Creek Falls and had breakfast at the South Fork Lodge before returning to Casa Budde West.

Lavender Farm
Posted: July 26, 2017

There is a farm just north of Teton Idaho that grows lavender and sells products made from that lavender.

I have contemplated going there to take photos for sometime now but it is forty miles from Driggs. I became inspired to make the trek after running across another photographer's photos of lavender fields on line.

July 4th Fireworks
Posted: July 04, 2017

We attended the Driggs Fourth of July Fireworks display this evening. As usual, it was quite good but with a bit of a twist on the grand finale. Most of the finale was lower to the ground than usual. Not a lot of the "kabooms" I like so well.

I thought I would give it a go and attempt some photos this year.

Teton Valley
Posted: September 01, 2016

Rick Schuessler and I decided to do our photography in Teton Valley Idaho today.

We drove up Highway 32 just north of Tetonia. Along this road, we took some photos of an old house on a hill that overlooks the valley and back at the Tetons. We continued north and stopped to take photos of the old Pillsbury grain elevator (now used to store seed potatoes).

We then proceeded to Ashton and then south on Highway 20 to Highway 33. Drove that back to Driggs stopping at the scenic overlook just before Tetonia.

July 4th Parade - Victor
Posted: July 04, 2015

Today was the annual Fourth of July Parade held in Victor Idaho.

There were a lot of parade participants as well as spectators. There were marchers, horses, old cars, local activity groups and merchants in the parade. The oldest resident in the valley was also featured and got a great ovation from the spectators.

It seems everyone had a good time especially the kids. They scrambled to pick up candy being thrown by folks on the floats.

Bear Lake Wildlife Refuge
Posted: June 23, 2012

I was originally planning a photo outing to the Grays Lake Wildlife Refuge but I missed a turn. As I have been wanting to take a day trip to the Bear Lake area at the border of Idaho and Utah and I was almost there when I discovered I missed my turn... what the hell.

There is a Bear Lake Wildlife Refuge and wetlands where I wound up taking photos. I got a few usable photos but I would not say the area was worthy of another visit.
